What the cash runway tells you

Cash runway is the number of months your business can keep operating before it runs out of money, assuming your income and spending stay roughly the same. It's the single most-watched number for any founder managing limited cash.

Your net burn is monthly expenses minus monthly revenue. Divide your cash balance by that burn and you get runway. If you make more than you spend, you're cash-flow positive and runway is effectively unlimited.

Formula

Runway (months) = Cash on hand ÷ (Monthly expenses − Monthly revenue)

How to use it

  1. Enter your current cash on hand across all accounts.
  2. Enter your average monthly revenue.
  3. Enter your average monthly expenses.
  4. Read your runway in months and your estimated cash-out date.

Worked example

With $120,000 in the bank, $18,000 monthly revenue, and $42,000 monthly expenses, your net burn is $24,000/month—about 5.0 months of runway.
FAQ

Common questions

Cash runway is how many months your company can operate before running out of cash at its current net burn rate. It equals your cash balance divided by monthly expenses minus monthly revenue.
Two levers: increase revenue or reduce expenses. Even a small cut in net burn adds months, because runway is your cash divided by that burn.
Many founders aim to keep a comfortable buffer—often cited as 12 to 18 months—so they can operate and raise from a position of strength. Your ideal target depends on your stage and how predictable your revenue is.
